Adding a coat of paint to a house can bring it to life. As a construction painter, you will be responsible for covering interior and exteriors walls, cabinets, and other surfaces with primers, sealers, paint, and stain to make a building functional and attractive.

To be a top-notch construction painter, you need a good eye and attention to detail. Painting doesn’t require much heavy-lifting, but it will require you to be nimble and climb ladders. Also, don’t be afraid to get messy. Careful preparation and set-up will protect your work area from paint splatters and spills, but not your clothes. In your toolbox, you will need brushes, rollers, spray guns, caulking guns, putty knives, sanding machines and more.

Learning painting skills will open a variety of opportunities for you in the construction industry–nearly every surface can be painted. You can work indoors or outdoors on both residential and commercial projects. Depending on your skill set, you may want to paint interiors to make them more vibrant or apply exterior sealants that protect buildings from the weather. You can even specialize in artistic finishes and decorative techniques like sponging, distressing and faux finishing. Painting is a high-demand craft that will always be valuable.
