Pop Up Construction Skills Bootcamp in Aurora

Construction Skills Bootcamp is an entry-level course to jumpstart your career through hands-on training and job search support. This July, Colorado Homebuilding Academy is bringing Bootcamp to a William Lyon Homes jobsite in Aurora’s Southshore neighborhood. Join our community of alumni who are building well-paying, meaningful careers in a booming industry!

 

 

Students earn:

  • Option to take OSHA-10 certification class at the Academy

  • Set of starter tools

Cost:

Tuition is free if you’re pursuing a new job or promotion in Colorado’s construction industry.

When & Where

You will attend classes at a William Lyon Homes jobsite in Aurora’s Southshore neighborood. You will receive an address and detailed directions after applying. We offer two schedule options:

Morning Bootcamp:

  • July 8 – July 25
  • M, T, W, TH
  • 8:00am– 12:00pm

Afternoon Bootcamp:

  • July 9 – July 26
  • T, W, TH, F
  • 12:30pm– 4:30pm

Course Content

Basic Safety

  • Construction safety best practices
  • Jobsite safety
  • Personal Protective Equipment
  • Safe lifting and carrying techniques
  • Scaffolding safety
  • Ladder safety
  • OSHA 10 certification
  • Basic jobsite first aid
  • Basic fire safety

Construction Industry Knowledge

  • Identify career pathways
  • Understand scope of projects
  • Demonstrate technical and academic requirements for career pathways
  • Demonstrate construction materials usage, safety, and identification

Construction Math

  • Practice common jobsite math operations and formulas
  • Demonstrate math skills needed to pursue a career in construction

Hand and Power Tools

  • Identify safe and proper usage of various hand and power tools
  • Hand and power tool maintenance
  • Identify Specialty tools in carpentry and other trades

Career Preparation

  • Understand basic elements of the employment process
  • Employability skills
  • Job retention skills
  • Work-life balance

Blueprint Reading

  • Common blueprint reading terms, views, and lines
  • Identify selected symbols and abbreviations
  • Plans, elevations, schedules, and other elements
  • Specification parts

Build Projects

  • Project safety
  • Blueprint reading and application
  • Develop skills through increasingly complex building projects

Instructor

Robert McElreavey

Robert is a Master Plumber with over 30 years of experience. He has been teaching the construction trades for 14 years, including apprenticeship-level plumbing. Robert has also taught carpentry skills to adults at Salvation Army centers and to court-involved young men at Ridge View Youth Services Center. When he is not working, Robert enjoys skiing, biking and surfing and spending time with his wife and two children.

Attend an Information Session at the Lakehouse At Southshore to complete an application.
